Written communication is different from other forms of communication as it is limited to only the language that is being used, there are no visual or vocal cues to help interpret the tone of the message. Written communication requires more knowledge of the language than other forms of communication as they must choose the correct words to set the tone of the message.

Further restrictions may also be placed by the nature of the message, an email regarding business would need written using professional language.
